Ever since I have learned about the SQR technique in my Language Arts and Reading classes I have been trying to use it. This week I used this technique during my English class by reading the article “Marry Him.” We had to actively read the article which included highlighting key ideas, and underlining important statements. Also we had to circle unknown vocabulary words, and summarize details. This method really helped me this week. I received an A plus on my English test. This method has also helped me in my Reading class. When I read an excerpt from The Things They Carried, I feel more focused on the text. This method helps me memorize key information. This week I am probably going to use the SQR technique on my English homework because every time we read an article, the following class period we are tested on the information from the article. Also my English professor requires the class to actively read our homework assignments before they are due. I think it is beneficial that I have to actively read in both my English and Reading classes. By summarizing the details it makes it easier to review for tests. I feel that the more I expand my knowledge on active reading, or SQR, educational reading will become easier to understand. The only downside about active reading is that it is currently more time consuming, but the more I practice, the more natural it will become in my lifestyle. I am enjoying the knowledge I am gaining from this class. :)
